A modern box bed is a bed with a closed, box-like base that hides storage under the mattress, opened either by lifting the top (hydraulic or manual) or through drawers. It gives you a clean, low look and a lot of storage in one footprint, which is why it’s become the default bed in so many Indian apartments.
Quick answer
Choose a hydraulic box bed if you store bulky things you open a few times a month and your bed is close to walls. Choose drawers if you open the storage every day and have about 90 cm of free floor beside the bed. For a 10 x 10 ft room, a queen (60 x 78 in) hydraulic bed usually fits best.
Most people we meet aren’t choosing a bed style first. They’re trying to fit a bed, a wardrobe and a bit of storage into a 10 x 11 ft room without blocking the walkway. So this guide starts with the decision and the measurements, then the designs. Plan it with the rest of your bedroom, not on its own, and it will look like it belongs.
Hydraulic vs drawer box bed: which one should you pick?
| Hydraulic (gas-lift) box bed | Drawer box bed | Manual lift-up box bed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you open it | Lift the mattress platform; gas struts hold it up | Pull drawers out from the side or foot | Lift the top panel by hand, often in 2 parts |
| Storage | Largest: the whole base | Smaller: drawers only | Large, same as hydraulic |
| Best for | Quilts, suitcases, seasonal clothes | Daily clothes, kids' toys, linen | Rarely used items on a budget |
| Floor space needed | Very little beside the bed | About 90 cm on the drawer side | Very little, but needs two hands |
| How often to open | Weekly or monthly | Every day | Occasionally |
| Watch out for | Strut rating vs mattress weight; pinch points | Drawer runners; floor must be level | Heavy to lift with a mattress on top |
| Approx custom cost, queen | ₹40,000 to ₹75,000 | ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 | ₹30,000 to ₹55,000 |
Our rule of thumb:
- Pick hydraulic if the bed is against a wall or a wardrobe, if you store bulky things, or if the floor is tight on both sides.
- Pick drawers if you’ll open the storage every day and have a clear side of at least 90 cm.
- Mix both in a master bedroom: hydraulic for the main base, two shallow drawers at the foot for daily things.

Box bed sizes: mattress, outer size and the room you need
Order the mattress size first, then the bed. A box bed built for a 72 inch mattress won’t take a 78 inch one later.
| Bed | Mattress size (inches) | Mattress size (cm) | Approx outer size with headboard (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 x 72 / 75 / 78 | 91 x 183 / 191 / 198 | 100 x 210 to 225 |
| Double | 48 x 72 / 75 / 78 | 122 x 183 / 191 / 198 | 132 x 210 to 225 |
| Queen | 60 x 72 / 75 / 78 | 152 x 183 / 191 / 198 | 162 x 210 to 225 |
| King | 72 x 72 / 75 / 78 | 183 x 183 / 191 / 198 | 193 x 210 to 225 |
Outer size assumes a frame of about 5 cm on each side and a headboard 10 to 20 cm deep. Upholstered and storage headboards can be deeper.
Height: keep the top of the mattress at about 45 to 55 cm from the floor. It’s comfortable to sit on and still leaves 25 to 30 cm of storage depth inside the box.
Clearances that decide whether it fits
| Space | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Walkway on a side you use | 60 cm | 75 cm |
| Drawer side (drawer pull plus standing room) | 85 cm | 95 cm |
| Bed to a hinged wardrobe | 90 cm | 100 cm |
| Bed to a sliding wardrobe | 70 cm | 75 cm |
| Foot of bed to wall or TV unit | 60 cm | 75 cm |
Quick fit check for a 10 x 10 ft room (305 x 305 cm): a queen bed about 220 cm long leaves around 85 cm at the foot. Across the width, 162 cm of bed leaves about 143 cm for both sides. With a wardrobe on one wall, that’s tight, which is why a hydraulic queen (no drawer clearance needed) usually beats a king or a drawer bed in rooms this size. If you’re choosing wardrobes at the same time, our wardrobe designs with a dressing unit show which shutter types save the most floor.
Hydraulic headroom: when the platform lifts, its edge rises roughly 90 to 110 cm. Keep the headboard ledge clear, and check that wall lights, a window sill or bedside lamps aren’t in its path.
6 modern box bed designs that work in Indian bedrooms
1. Drawer box bed
Two or four wide drawers on soft-close runners keep everyday things within reach: bedsheets, kids’ clothes, the extra pillow. Put drawers only on the side you can actually open, and keep the other side solid. Ask for drawers that run on the floor-level base, not hanging from the frame, so they don’t sag over time.
2. Hydraulic box bed with a clean panel base
A plain, handle-free base with a hydraulic lift is the most modern-looking box bed there is. Nothing sticks out, the lines stay clean, and you get the full base for storage. Choose a matte laminate in the same tone as your wardrobe so the room reads as one set. This is the one we suggest most often for compact master bedrooms and kids’ rooms.
3. Upholstered headboard box bed
A tall padded headboard makes a box bed feel like a hotel bed and is great for reading in bed. In Bangalore’s damp months, pick a fabric that’s easy to clean and keep the headboard off an outside wall that tends to get damp. A headboard panel that runs up toward the ceiling also pairs well with the false ceiling ideas for the master bedroom, so the bed wall and ceiling look planned together.
4. Low platform box bed with a ledge
A low base with a 15 to 20 cm ledge around the mattress gives you a place for a book, a phone or a glass of water, so you can skip one side table in a small room. Keep it at least 40 cm from the floor if older parents will use the room; very low beds are hard to get out of.
5. Metal and wood bed with a storage ottoman
If you love a lighter, industrial look, a metal frame bed won’t give you a storage base. A storage ottoman or a low trunk at the foot gets some of that storage back. It’s a good choice for a guest room where you don’t need much storage.
6. Statement and sculpted designs
Curved headboards, bold colours and floating-look bases (a recessed plinth that hides the legs, with a strip light under it) turn the bed into the room’s centrepiece. These can still have hydraulic storage inside. Keep the rest of the room calm so the bed gets the attention.
Gas-lift safety: what to check on a hydraulic box bed
Hydraulic beds are safe when they’re specified properly. Problems usually come from struts that don’t match the mattress, or from kids treating the box as a hiding place.
- Tell the carpenter your mattress weight and thickness. Gas struts are rated by force. A strut that’s too weak won’t hold the platform up; one that’s too strong makes it hard to close.
- Split the lid on king beds. Two halves are lighter to lift and safer to close.
- Keep fingers clear of the hinge side when lowering the lid, and lower it with your hand. Don’t let it drop.
- Never let children play inside the storage. Talk to them about it and keep the lid closed when it’s not in use.
- Don’t sit on the platform edge while it’s open, and don’t overfill the box so the lid has to be forced shut.
- Once a year: tighten the bolts, check the struts for oil marks, and listen for creaks. If the lid starts drifting down on its own, replace the struts; it’s a cheap fix.
Keeping a box bed fresh in Bangalore's monsoon
- Store only fully dry linen and clothes, in cotton bags rather than sealed plastic.
- Add a few silica gel packs and open the storage on dry, sunny days to air it out.
- Ask for laminate on the inside of the box too, not bare BWP plywood, so it can be wiped clean.
- Leave a small gap or vent so the mattress can breathe; a fully sealed base can trap moisture under it.
- Keep the bed a few centimetres off any outside wall that gets damp.

Size your box bed with Q Oak

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, a hydraulic or a drawer box bed?
A hydraulic box bed gives more storage and needs no space beside the bed, so it suits small rooms and bulky items. A drawer bed is better if you open the storage every day and have about 90 cm of clear floor on the drawer side.
Are hydraulic box beds safe?
Yes, when the gas struts are rated for your mattress weight and the bed is installed properly. Lower the lid by hand, keep fingers away from the hinge side, split the lid on king beds and never let children play inside the storage.
What size box bed fits a 10 x 10 ft bedroom?
A queen box bed (60 x 78 inch mattress, about 162 x 220 cm outside) usually fits, leaving around 85 cm at the foot. A hydraulic base works better than drawers because it doesn’t need side clearance.
How much weight can a hydraulic bed lift?
It depends on the gas struts. They’re chosen to match the platform plus the mattress, so share your mattress weight and thickness before the bed is made. If you change to a heavier mattress later, the struts may need changing too.
How do I stop a box bed from smelling damp?
Store only dry items in breathable cotton bags, add silica gel packs, laminate the inside of the box and open it to air on dry days. Keep the bed slightly away from any outside wall that gets damp.
How much does a modern box bed cost in Bangalore?
A custom queen box bed in BWP plywood with laminate costs roughly ₹30,000 to ₹75,000 depending on the storage type, with king sizes about 15 to 25% more. An upholstered headboard adds around ₹10,000 to ₹30,000.
